According to legend, when the Jade Emperor summoned the animals to a banquet to be selected for the Chinese Zodiac, the rat tricked the cat by giving him the wrong date. When the cat showed up too late, left out of the 12 signs of the zodiac, he vowed revenge and became the rat's enemy forever.
